1. Rocky Dennis (Mask)
Mask was an Academy Award winning movie based on the real-life story of Roy L. Dennis (Rocky) - an American boy afflicted with craniodiaphyseal dysplasia, an extremely rare, sclerotic bone disorder which causes disfigurements in his cranium and facial bones, and also results in a shortened lifespan and chronic headaches. The movie followed his family life, his school life and his personal/social life. His family life was loving and he was accepted unconditionally by them and his Mother's extended 'biker family', while his school life was difficult - he was often teased about his appearance - but he was academically successful, and his personal/social life had both its ups and downs - he had friends and found himself a girlfriend (Diane, a pretty blind girl), but her family did not like the idea of her associating with Rocky and ultimately prohibited her from seeing him. Described as looking 'like a lion' by his Mother, Rocky took life in his stride and was friendly and ambitious - wanting to travel the world and indeed placing pins on a map of the world highlighting specific places he wanted to visit. Tragically, while still a teenager, Rocky retired to his room one night, complaining of severe headaches, removed the pins from his world map and went to bed, where he would die in his sleep.
So that's that. Can you think of any other movie characters who were severely deformed? Let us know in the comments box below! And please feel free to follow me on Twitter.
