I don’t know about you, but I do absolutely love love love “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” - also a mad genre bender, mind you. With “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” Charlie Kaufman has gone a bit more bleak.

A young woman, played by Jessie Buckley, tells herself that she wants to end things. But she (and we) is not quite sure what she wants to end. Is it her life? An old habit? Her relationship with Jake? While on their first trip together to visit his old quirky parents out on their farm, her details start to change drastically: the clothes, everyones jobs and even Jake’s parent’s age.

Not too much can be uncovered about this flick without giving away too much, or even an opinion you might disagree with, most likely. The perspective of your narrator, an unreliable one, that is, and who is actually at the centre of the happenings, is blurred. There are time loops, genuinely uncomfortable scenes right out of the highway scene from “Mouth of Madness”, that make you feel lost and somehow unwelcome, and even totally out of concept moments that, on occasion, break the fourth wall.

We are included into the young woman’s life, wether we like it or not. And while it is not genuinely frightening, its confusing narration and the daring play with genres might send a shiver down your spine once in a while.
