In a climate where strong female roles are hard to come by, True Grit offers one up to make the entirety of the female gender proud. Steinfeld plays Mattie Ross, a young girl on a mission for blood. Enlisting the help of U.S marshal Rooster Cogburn (Bridges), she seeks to track down the man responsible for killing her father. She may only be fourteen years old, but Mattie is stubborn and wise beyond her years, and it shows in her interplay with Cogburn and Texas ranger Shia LaBoeuf (Matt Damon). Steinfeld more than holds her own against two seasoned professionals, coming across as mature and believable - something child actors often fail to do. When she has to play the 'damsel in distress' she does so with a sense of humility rather than dissatisfying helplessness, but she is also entirely conceivable when her character has to grab the initiative and get things done. Hailee Steinfeld was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in True Grit, and has followed it up with significantly strong roles in Romeo and Juliet and Ender's Game. The future is looking very bright indeed for this fledgling star.
