10 Unlikely (But Wonderful) Relationships That Spawned In Movies

1. Bob Harris & Charlotte (Lost In Translation)

Bob Charlotte Lost In Translation The wonderful Lost in Translations sees a relationship develop between Scarlett Johansson's Charlotte and Bill Murray's Bob Harris. Bob is an ageing American movie star who is in Tokyo to film an advertisement for "Suntory" whisky, for which he will receive $2 million. Charlotte, a young college graduate, is in Tokyo with her husband John - a celebrity photographer who is on location for work - and is constantly being left behind in her hotel room. One night, Bob retreats to the hotel bar on his own where Charlotte, sitting at a table with John and some friends, notices him and has a waiter bring him a cup of sake (a Japanese alcoholic drink) from her table. Bob and Charlotte keep on having brief encounters with each other on a night at the hotel bar and around the hotel in general, until Charlotte invites Bob to meet up with some local friends of hers. Bob accepts and the unlikely pairing embark on a friendship and develop a bond based on their mutual loneliness and adventures in Tokyo together, experiencing the differences between Japanese and American culture and the differences between their own generations. A couple of days before Bob is due to leave, he sleeps with the hotel singer. Charlotte arrives at his room with the intention of joining Bob for breakfast, only to find the woman in his room, which leads to conflict and tension (and seemingly some jealousy) while the pair have lunch together. That same night, the two of them reconcile during a fire alarm and express how they will miss each and share one last evening together in the hotel bar. The next morning, Bob says goodbye at the hotel lobby and watches her depart from his view in an elevator whilst clearly feeling sad and upset. On his taxi journey to the airport, Bob sees Charlotte on a crowded street and gets out to say goodbye properly. They hug and Bob whispers something to Charlotte as she cries (whatever he said is not heard by the audience, but it is obviously poignant). The two then share a kiss, signifying their true feelings, say goodbye to each other and then Bob departs for good.
