5. Lester Burnham & Angela Hayes (American Beauty)
American Beauty is an absolutely incredible film, directed by Sam Mendes, which sees office worker Lester Burnham, who is becoming jaded with his mundane life, having a mid-life crisis and becoming infatuated with his teenage daughter's cheerleading best friend Angela Hayes. When Lester is about to be laid off from his job, he blackmails his boss for $60,000 and quits. He begins to live out his youth again after that - taking employment serving fast food, buying his dream car (a 1970 Pontiac Firebird), smoking marijuana and starting to work out after he overhears Angela tell his daughter that she would find him sexually attractive if he improved his physique. After having fantasised about her for the whole movie (see the picture above), and after having just turned down the homosexual advances of his next-neighbour, Lester finds Angela distraught in his house after she had fallen out with his daughter (and after she had also been told a few home truths by her). She begins to seduce him and it appears as though they are going to have sex. However, after learning that Angela is a virgin (despite the fact she had previously been boasting about having slept with loads of men), Lester puts a stop to proceedings and, after Angela is initially very embarrassed about the whole thing, the pair instead bond over their shared frustrations. They talk and their relationship changes from one of lust to one of understanding and respect. Of course, Lester would be killed by his next-door neighbour soon after (as he didn't want anyone finding out he was gay), so the relationship couldn't develop any further than that.
