10 Unlikely Movie Sequels That Were Surprisingly Awesome

6. Saw VI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MW8BaH-w7-4 The original Saw was a cracking horror thriller that hinged around a twist that blew everyone away; the second and third films managed to be worthy follow-ups thanks to clever twists and plenty of original gore. Saw IV saw the series begin to decline with lame twists to drag the series out further, and Saw V was basically "Previously on Saw", complete with the most bizarre twist of all - that it didn't have a twist. Expectations were low for Saw VI after the dreadful fifth film, which goes a way to explain why box office grosses for the sixth film were down despite it being the best one since the third. Re-focusing the plot as the new Jigsaw, Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor), is forced to earn his own stripes, the film isn't as bogged down by exposition as the previous film, instead delivering plenty of vile gore, and a surprisingly intelligent narrative that takes a stab at America's health-care industry. I don't think anyone expected a Saw film to go the social commentary route, yet they did so in an amusing manner that didn't get in the way of all the grisly violence.
