10 Unluckiest Sci-Fi Movie Characters Ever

6. Douglas Hunsiker - Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes

Interstellar Matthew Mcconaughey

Things don't get much unluckier than becoming the inadvertent vector of a flu which causes a global pandemic that ends up wiping out 90% of the world's population.

Douglas Hunsiker (David Hewlett) is the neighbour of protagonist Dr. Will Rodman (James Franco), and is characterised as a hot-headed a**hole for getting angry when Will's adopted chimpanzee Caesar escapes into his garden and gets close to his young daughter.

Later on he understandably gets pissed off when Will's dementia-addled father Charles (John Lithgow) crashes his car into his own, and when confronting him about it, he's dropkicked by Caesar, who then also bites one of his fingers.

But the culmination of Hunsiker's bad luck comes when Robert Franklin (Tyler Labine), a chimp handler working with Will, turns up at Will's house and starts loudly banging on his door.

Hunsiker, alarmed at the commotion and believing that somebody might be trying to break into Will's house, confronts Franklin, who promptly sneezes blood on him.

This wouldn't be quite so bad were Franklin not infected with the fatal Simian Flu, which in turn infects Hunsiker, all because he left his house to do the neighbourly thing.

And so, the film's mid-credits scene shows Hunsiker, an airline pilot, at the airport getting ready for a flight, when his nose starts bleeding.

Through no fault of his own, Hunsiker ends up causing the Simian Flu to spread across the globe, condemning billions to death and setting a veritable apocalypse in motion.
