10 Unluckiest Sci-Fi Movie Characters Ever
3. Dr. Ryan Stone - Gravity
Gravity's protagonist Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is forced to endure the physical embodiment of the maxim "everything that can go wrong will go wrong" as she attempts to make it back to Earth once her space shuttle is destroyed mid-orbit.
For one, the instigating accident is itself highly unlikely: the shuttle is obliterated by a cloud of space debris caused by the Russians shooting down a defunct spy satellite.
From there, Stone loses communication with Mission Control as more satellites are destroyed, all of her fellow crew members are killed save for Lieutenant Kowalski (George Clooney), and the debris cloud will complete its orbit in 90 minutes, at which point it will return to wreak more havoc.
Then Kowalski ends up sacrificing himself to save Stone, yet when a back-up shuttle has no fuel she very nearly commits suicide in despair.
But she eventually pushes on, and even when she successfully enters a usable capsule to head towards Earth, the struggle still isn't over.
Once the shuttle crash-lands in a lake on Earth, the capsule begins to flood with water and she almost drowns as a result, until the capsule sinks and she's able to swim out.
Talk about a person who earned their survival, because let's face it, just about everybody would've given up long before Dr. Stone did. That's the universe straight-up telling you it doesn't want you to live.
