10 Unluckiest Sci-Fi Movie Characters Ever

2. David Drayton - The Mist

If cinema ever handed out a Hall of Fame award for Bad Luck, it would surely go to The Mist's David Drayton (Thomas Jane), who at the end of the film makes a decision which will surely haunt the rest of his days.

David is in a small group of survivors in the third act, who collectively surmise that there's no hope to repel the invasion of interdimensional Lovecraftian creatures massacring their town.

And so, David and the three other adults enter a suicide pact, culminating in David shooting them dead along with his own young son, Billy (Nathan Gamble). Without any bullets left to shoot himself, David walks out into the mist and waits to be devoured by the creatures.

But at that moment, a most unexpected sight emerges through the mist: a tank, followed by a large military convoy. As it turns out, the Army finally managed to turn the tables on the aliens and has effectively begun to quell the invasion.

In short, David killed four people, including his own son, for nothing, and had he waited just a minute or two longer, they all would've been safe and secure.

Considering the options and information David had, you absolutely can't blame him, but at the same time, that's the sort of all-timer bad luck that'll ruin your whole life. It's probably fair to assume that a guilt-riddled David ended up eating a gun soon thereafter anyway.
