10. Frankenstein

How could you not want a Guillermo del Toro Frankenstein film? Especially given that the director was reportedly courting Benedict Cumberbatch to play the eponymous doctor (as he had on stage to great effect for Danny Boyle), and regular collaborator Doug Jones (who was both the Faun and creepy no-eye guy in Pan's Labyrinth) for the monster. Just as Cronos threw out most of the established vampire mythology, you could rely on del Toro not to rest on the laurels of past Frankenstein adaptations, of which there have been... let's say a few. But when he signed up with Universal to make his version he was adamant it would be a period piece, not unlike their classic, iconic Boris Karloff-starring version. In fact, del Toro had signed a contract with Universal that included enough films to last him until 2017. To date, none of them have been made, which means we may never see this perfect-sounding Frankenstein: even on a conceptual level it boasts a great cast, a director famously sympathetic to monsters as well as humans, and undoubtedly some top-notch physical effects for the monster.
