After he was turned down for Batman, Whedon wasted no time in running off to another of DC's trinity of big heroes and the prototypical Strong Female Protagonist the writer had become associated with thanks to the likes of Dollhouse and Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Out of all the projects on this list, Wonder Woman might be the one Whedon was best suited to. Which means that it's the biggest disappointment in terms of not happening, especially considering all the work he put into it. It's unlikely that Gal Gadot's upcoming solo movie as Wonder Woman will have much in common with the script Whedon chipped away at years ago, which would be sort of a shame. He had some good ideas. Teaming with Martix producer Joel Silver, Whedon's screenplay had army man Steve Trevor crashing onto Themyscira and returning to Mans World with Wonder Woman in tow, the classic beats from the comic and TV series. No word on why the project was canned in the end, but apparently he had Cobie Smulders eyed for the lead role (who later popped up in his Avengers film).
