10 Unmade Joss Whedon Films That Sound Awesome

3. The Serenity Trilogy

Firefly is the little show that could. Despite Fox bungling the order they aired the show in, as well constantly changing the time slot and then cancelling the series entirely before the first season had even finished being broadcast, Firefly managed to accumulate the most fervent cult following of any Joss Whedon-created show €“ which is saying a lot, given the Buffy faithful. It was almost certainly down to the efforts of fans €“ protesting Fox, having letter-writing campaigns and taking out adverts in magazines €“ that got Serenity made, a film produced by Universal and written/directed by Whedon which tied up the major plots of the TV series that needed a proper ending. And involved killing off half the cast, naturally. This is Joss Whedon, after all. The reason for all that death and destruction was because there were actors not interested in appearing in future films. Yes, as improbable as one Serenity film getting made was, Whedon put some thought into making it a trilogy. Obviously scuppered by Serenity being impenetrable to people who hadn't seen the show, and barely making any money. But imagine more of it!
