10 Unnecessary Star Wars Details You Need To Know
2. The Mandalorian's Spiders Were Inspired By Ralph McQuarrie's Empire Strikes Back Concept Art
Justifiably scaring the life out of the majority of folks who tuned into The Mandalorian's Chapter 10 episode back in November 2020, the live-action debut of some spider-like space monsters was enough to leave most wincing in horror from the comfort of their own homes.
In truth, though, these pale arachnid-esque creatures had been threatening to make their presence known within the galaxy far, far away for decades.
Years before the spider-entities set their sights on Mando and a devious egg-munching Grogu, Dave Filoni and the gang had actually found a way to unleash a similar set of unsettling beings on his Rebels animated series heroes during their adventures on Atollon. And that was seemingly the eventual Mandalorian producer's way of tipping his cowboy hat to Ralph McQuarrie's now-legendary concept art for The Empire Strikes Back.
According to McQuarrie's work, the towering white spider-aliens would've rocked up on Dagobah during the moments when Luke Skywalker initially met Master Yoda. That, of course, never came to pass. But creatures clearly inspired by Ralph's knobbly white spider were finally given their live-action moment in the twin suns thanks to The Child being a greedy lil' bastard.
