10 Unpopular Movie Opinions (And How To Justify Them)
5. Scarface Has Aged Horribly
Brian De Palma's iconic 1983 Scarface remake is every rapper's favourite movie and boasts one of Al Pacino's undeniable signature performances. If you haven't seen it recently, though, you might not be able to appreciate just how badly it's aged over the last 35 years.
For starters, Giorgio Moroder's synth-fuelled musical score doesn't hold up at all and feels positively chintzy compared to the rest of the movie (which isn't exactly a paragon of good taste itself).
Elsewhere the disco scenes are cringe-worthy to modern eyes and Pacino's performance as Tony Montana is a pure scenery-devouring caricature in a film that too often feels shockingly empty.
Some have argued that the film's overall tackiness and lack of substance is intended to reflect the period's own ick, but it's not a particularly convincing claim.
There was a time when Scarface simply seemed cool - and it certainly helps if you first watched it as a youngster - but these days it feels like far more of a hollow relic than its release date would suggest.
