10 Unpopular Movie Opinions (And How To Justify Them)
4. Watchmen's Ending Improves Upon The Source Material
Zack Snyder's Watchmen received middling notices from fans, who were split on whether the director had done justice to Alan Moore's iconic graphic novel or summarily butchered it.
Snyder's film is certainly messy, that much is clear, but given the belief of many directors that Moore's source material was "unfilmable", the fact that Snyder turned in such a lavish, ambitious end result is a testament to his underappreciated filmmaking skill.
And crucially, he had the balls to make a major change to the third act of the story which actually improved upon the source material.
In the book, the villainous Ozymandias unleashes a gigantic squid upon New York City in the hope that it will unite humanity against a common exterior enemy.
But in the film, Ozymandias (Matthew Goode) instead frames Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup) for the destruction, which adds an appealingly tragic layer to Ozymandias' plan: in order to unite humanity he isn't simply ass-pulling a squid, he's making a superhero into a mass-murdering tyrant.
And to make it even more galling, Manhattan wilfully goes along with the ruse after seeing its positive effect on the world's superpowers, even killing Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) to prevent him from revealing the truth. Savage.
