10 Unreleased Cuts Of Movies That Are Probably Terrible

5. Planes, Trains & Automobiles: The 4-Hour Hughes Cut

Watching John Hughes' legendary 1987 comedy Planes, Trains and Automobiles, it's easy to think that you could watch Steve Martin and John Candy riff off one another forever, and Hughes' legendary original cut of the film actually got pretty close.

Hughes continuously rewrote the movie during shooting, such that he shot far more material than expected. As such, his first cut of the film ran to 3 hours and 45 minutes - that's far more than double the final cut's 92 minutes.

Many scenes featured in the film's trailers never made it into the theatrical release, with entire characters and subplots being excised from the story, most prominently that Neal's (Steve Martin) wife Susan (Laila Robins) suspects he's having an affair while trying to get home with Del (John Candy).

Though there's allegedly a lot of intriguing character shading in this version - such as Del expanding upon his grief following his wife's death - it's also likely to be hugely undisciplined, if not unreleasable, as so many assembly cuts are.

An extended cut that added select scenes back in could be a fun sit, but for all the hashtag clamouring for Paramount to release this mega-cut on Paramount+, it'd almost certainly be too much of a good thing.
