10 Upcoming Blockbuster Sequels That Will Make Or Break Their Franchise
7. Star Trek 3
Up until the announcement of Justin Lin, the third sequel in the reboot of the Star Trek franchise might as well have been called "The Search for a Director". The follow-up to Star Trek Into Darkness, which brought Benedict Cumberbatch's re-imagined Khan Noonien Singh, and a sort-of alternate rendition of Wrath of Khan, has been flying pretty low under the radar thus far - but it is happening. The first two modern Star Trek films caused division in the core fan base as far as the alternate timeline and re-writing history goes, but for the most part, the general public seemed to enjoy them. The third film will be the first without director J.J. Abrams, however, as he has taken the helm of the new Star Wars film, which is why this is a make or break film: including Generations, the original crew of the Starship Enterprise had seven big screen outings. If Star Trek 3 fails with a new director behind the camera, you could see it stuck as a trilogy, and Star Trek out of theatres for quite some time (maybe beaming back down to television). And now that Lin is involved it looks like it will be a more action led affair - perhaps with all out Klingon war? From fast cars to starships - can he handle it?
