10 Upcoming Blockbuster Sequels That Will Make Or Break Their Franchise
4. Independence Day 2
One of the biggest gambles on the list. Independence Day is barely a franchise. The lone film came out in 1996 and ushered in the era of blowing up landmarks in summer blockbusters, but it hasn't aged particularly well. Really, it's a little hokey these days - but it still has people interested. Twenty years later, the nostalgia factor is huge with this one. The on-again, off-again sequel, at one point proposed as two movies, is on again, apparently greenlit despite the absence of star Will Smith. Director Roland Emmerich (The Day After Tomorrow) will return, and has a script producer Dean Devlin says is "fantastic." Lets hope so. If the movie tanks, the franchise is dead in the water. If it succeeds, expect at least one more film in the series in the near future.
