10 Upcoming Blockbuster Sequels That Will Make Or Break Their Franchise
3. Terminator: Genisys
A quasi-reboot-sequel that involves rewriting timelines and the issues repeated trips into the past can cause (just think of Homer with the toaster), Terminator: Genisys may not only be a make or break moment for the struggling Terminator franchise, but for the career of star Arnold Schwarzenegger. Why? Lets face it, the Oak hasn't exactly had a stellar comeback thus far. Since leaving politics, he has appeared in The Last Stand, an uneven film which seems to become a comedy halfway through, Escape Plan, alongside Sly Stallone, which was a decent film but horribly marketed (and better off with its original name "The Tomb"), and Sabotage, a film that flew under the radar and didn't even get a theatrical release in some territories. In fact, his highest profile appearance to date was in The Expendables 3, which had disappointing results at the box office despite being a solid outing. As for the Terminator franchise - Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines was hit and miss, including the awful "there's enough C4 here to take out ten supercomputers" line that became an early meme for a while, and Terminator: Salvation was anything but an improvement. It wasn't bad, exactly, but it didn't give us the future war we wanted. It was more Transformers than Terminator, plus the ending, which had been leaked online, was changed by director McG into a pale imitation of the original twist (which was to have John Connor die and be replaced by human/terminator hybrid Marcus). If Genisys tanks, that may be it for the franchise. The trailer was interesting, and the attention to detail in retracing the steps of the first two films impressive, but in order to really pump new life into the franchise, it needs to knock this out of the park. Especially since there are reportedly plans to have this film serve as the first of a trilogy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62E4FJTwSuc
