10 Upcoming Blockbuster Sequels That Will Make Or Break Their Franchise

5. Avatar 2

Forget for a moment that it was basically eye candy and created as a way to market James Cameron's next generation 3D cameras. Forget that the story was essentially "Dances with Big Blue Aliens" or "Pochana'vi" or some variation thereof. Forget that a large chunk of the acting was ham-fisted: Avatar was still a spectacle to behold in theatres, brought 3D film making back to relevance, and, like everything Cameron does, made ridiculous amounts of cash. Avatar 2, however, is no sure victory. Oh, it will make lots of money, but as much as the first? Lets face it, Avatar didn't really live up to expectations despite being the highest grossing film of all time. Do you hear fans clamouring for more the way fans of other franchises do? Cameron has not one, not two, but three sequels planned, something that was stroyboarded over five months with four writers (Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno) - without Cameron telling them which would be working on which sequel. The idea was to make a cohesive trilogy of sequels, with Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver returning for the films. Interesting approach, but it's the results that matter. If Avatar 2 doesn't knock it out of the park, Cameron may have made his first blunder in years - but would you really bet against him?
