10 Upcoming Comic Book Movies That Have Nothing To Do With Marvel Or DC
5. The Umbrella Academy
Gerard Way is perhaps best known as the frontman of the insanely inventive, melodramatic emo-rock band My Chemical Romance. He's since reinvented himself as a new wave-style solo artist, but in the downtime between making records and touring Way has focussed on his first love: comics. In fact, before he became a rock star, he was drawing his own stuff. From the looks of it his Batman pitch will never come to pass, and his stint on Spider-Man was reserved to an alternate reality one-shot (where SPDR was a robot piloted by a teenage girl), but most of Way's manic invention is evident in the pages of his Dark Horse series The Umbrella Academy. Taking the starting point of a team of superpowered kids, brought together by an eccentric old man when they were young and again at this funeral when they're old and jaded, so far the comic has featured a boy with his head fused to a gorilla's body, the Eiffel Tower revealed as a rocket, and the truth behind the JFK assassination. Dodegball's Rawson Marshall Thurber is working on a script for Universal.
Tom Baker is the Comics Editor at WhatCulture! He's heard all the Doctor Who jokes, but not many about Randall and Hopkirk. He also blogs at http://communibearsilostate.wordpress.com/
