2. Ash
Ash is a new sci-fi horror film from Flying Lotus, whose 2017 debut Kuso was one of the most talked-about and polarising horrors of the past decade.
Eiza González stars as Riya, a woman living on a distant planet who wakes up to find the crew of her space station killed, before she meets Brion (Aaron Paul), a man apparently sent to rescue her.
The trailer for Ash certainly sells its intriguingly hypnotic visuals, and Flying Lotus is nothing if not a filmmaker with a unique voice, even if the wildly mixed response to Kuso alone will probably ensure Ash is something of an acquired taste. The filmmaker certainly looks to be going hard here, which could either pay off with a mesmerising step up from his debut or an over-ambitious disaster in the making. Fingers crossed for the former.
Either way, it's unlikely that Ash is merely a passable, down-the-middle, "OK" movie.
