This Finnish horror promises a twisted and surreal journey that blends the fantastical with the nightmarish. Tinja, a 12-year-old gymnast, struggles to perfect her sport and to live up to the high standards of a mother driven by nothing more than projecting the image of a perfect life to her online followers.
After a crow attack on the perfect family home, during which Tinja's mother snaps the neck of a crow the young gymnast has rescued, Tinja finds an egg of what she assumes to be a crow chick. However, when the egg expands well out of the size range of a bird, Tinja continues her care. Audiences are given brief glimpses of the creature, who steadily transforms into something resembling the girl who saved its life.
What begins as something of a Cinderella story takes a hard turn into body horror. The last thing Hatching could be accused of being is Disney.
Though it has received a release in its native country, followed by a limited release in the US and Canada, UK audiences will have to wait for its official release in September.
