After moving to Bucharest, Romania with her boyfriend, Julie finds herself becoming increasingly isolated, unable to speak the language and navigate a culture much different to her own American experiences. Short-term loneliness while her partner works becomes the least of her worries when she notices a mysterious man from the building across the street. He seems to be constantly staring and watching the couple's apartment window.
After a neighbour is decapitated, Julie becomes convinced that the mysterious man is a serial killer following her every move; spying on her at home, and stalking her through the streets of her new neighbourhood.
Watcher promises a tense and anxiety-fuelled thriller that features a classic "girl chased by a monster" plot albeit with the film's antagonist being all too human. The movie premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival (22nd January 2022), where it received positive reviews. Common points of praise were Maika Monroe's performance as the film's lead and Chloe Okuno's inspired presentation of the material in her feature film directorial debut.
