10 Upcoming Movie Sequels Nobody Wants
2. I Am Legend 2
When I Am Legend released in 2007, it had the opportunity to adapt a truly special source material from Richard Matheson that posed some serious questions about the morality of humanity. What the film actually did, though, was ignore much of the meaning of the novel and instead opt for a big CGI finish that saw Will Smith's Robert Neville sacrifice himself.
It has been well documented that the alternate ending was far better, and much closer to the source material, though still not exact. Essentially, Robert found out that the Darkseekers were intelligent and feared him for what he had done to them, only attacking his home in an attempt to save one of theirs that he had captured.
Despite not ever being released apart from on the I Am Legend DVD bonus features, the upcoming sequel will follow on from the alternate ending rather than how the film actually concluded. Apart from essentially being an admission of what the original got wrong, this just doesn't make sense.
Instead of trying to make a follow-up work from an ending that has never been canon, I Am Legend is one of those rare franchises that would actually benefit from a full reboot and proper adaptation of Matheson's story. The ball was dropped in Francis Lawrence's iteration, so retell it from the very beginning rather than taking the alternate ending shortcut.
