10 Upcoming Movie Sequels That Are Only Going To Disappoint You

5. Sherlock Holmes 3

While the idea of Robert Downey Jr. playing Victorian England's most iconic detective didn't set too well with many longtime readers, both of his outings as Sherlock Holmes proved to be a hit with audiences, taking in over $500m apiece and scoring decent reactions from critics.

A third installment has been in the works for a decade, and is currently set to arrive in December of next year with Rocketman's Dexter Fletcher behind the camera, but with RDJ's star on the wane following his departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Guy Ritchie opting not to return, Sherlock Holmes 3 faces an uphill battle in capturing the public's imagination.

Ritchie's stylistic touches gave the series a distinct visual flair, and if Fletcher decides to ape those techniques then he'll no doubt face criticism for either pandering to the fans or failing to improve on what his predecessor brought to the franchise, and if he doesn't then people will be wondering why the most well-known parts of the previous movies have been left out entirely, leaving him in a pretty unwinnable situation.

The big-budget Holmes adventures weren't regarded as high art to begin with, but it was Guy Ritchie's unique directorial fingerprints that made them stand out, and there must have been a good reason why he decided against coming back for the trilogy-closing chapter.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
