10 Upcoming Movie Sequels We STILL Can't Believe Are Real

7. Coco 2

Two-time Oscar winner Coco is Pixar's most commercially successful original movie of the past decade, and simply one of their better recent movies full stop.

And yet, it felt like such an obvious standalone, one-off, closed-off project without a whole lot of sequel potential - it told its heart-warming story about mortality and that was it.

But because Disney doesn't know the meaning of the word "restraint," of course they recently confirmed that Coco 2 was in development for a planned theatrical release in 2029, with Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina set to return as co-directors.

While it's at least a relief to know that the lead creatives behind the original movie are back in the saddle, few will accept that this sequel exists out of pure creative necessity, especially considering that Pixar's sequel output over the past decade has rarely risen above "pretty good."

It seemed far more probable that Pixar would forge ahead with a more obvious sequel like Inside Out 3, yet considering Coco made over $800 million in 2017, the Mouse House evidently feels like they're leaving money on the table by not exploiting this "IP" for another go-around.
