10 Upcoming Movie Sequels We STILL Can't Believe Are Real

Mel Brooks' hilarious 1987 Star Wars spoof Spaceballs wasted no time at all angling for a sequel, given that the movie itself literally namedrops a potential follow-up - Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.

While obviously more of a tongue-in-cheek gag than a serious suggestion, Spaceballs' enduring popularity has ensured consistent audience interest in another movie.

But after more than 35 years without much forward movement, and Brooks now being well into his late nineties, it seemed like the window of opportunity had closed.

But in June 2024, Spaceballs 2 was officially announced with Brooks set to produce alongside Josh Gad, while Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar) will direct.

As of this past June, the sequel was confirmed for a theatrical release by 2027, and most unexpectedly, Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis, and Daphne Zuniga will return in the roles of Lone Starr, Dark Helmet, and Princess Vespa respectively.

Incredibly, despite his advanced age, Brooks will also reprise the roles of Yogurt and President Skroob in some capacity.

In terms of new cast members, Lewis Pullman - Bill Pullman's actual son - will play Lone Starr's son Starburst, while Keke Palmer will play a character called Destiny, and Gad will also appear in an undisclosed role.

While it remains to be seen if Spaceballs 2 can defy the tendency for belated comedy sequels to disappoint, the fact it's happening at all, with Brooks alive and kicking at 99 years of age no less, is a most unexpected outcome.
