10 Upcoming Movie Sequels We STILL Can't Believe Are Real
4. The Resurrection of the Christ
For a time it certainly seemed like a sequel to Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ was actually going to happen, considering the biblical epic's $612.1 million box office haul in 2004 and the obvious potential of a follow-up focused on Jesus Christ's (Jim Caviezel) resurrection.
Yet over the past decade, development of The Resurrection of the Christ has been extremely slow-going, which combined with Gibson's radioactive reputation in Hollywood seemed to torpedo most possibility of the sequel ever actually coming to fruition.
But by 2024, Gibson had a script locked down and was busy scouting locations in Europe, while earlier this year he confirmed that Jim Caviezel would reprise the role of Jesus with the help of digital de-ageing technology.
Though Lionsgate is set to distribute the sequel, there's no word yet on a release date, but considering that pre-production has finally ramped up, it wouldn't be surprising if shooting started by year's end.
For the better part of 20 years, this truly seemed like a sequel destined to be trapped in development hell forever more, and yet it now finally seems to be coming together.
