10 Upcoming Movie Trailers That Are Probably Tricking You
7. Rey DOESN'T Turn Evil - Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
The marketing for the Star Wars sequel trilogy has made an art out of screwing with fans.
The Force Awakens hyped up a Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) appearance that never happened, and The Last Jedi spliced separate scenes together to imply that Rey (Daisy Ridley) might join the Dark Side.
Well, The Rise of Skywalker's marketing campaign might be the most suspect one yet, or perhaps we as fans have simply become increasingly suspicious of anything J.J. Abrams is involved with.
Though it's quite probable that the trailers are overselling the size of Palpatine's (Ian McDiarmid) role, misdirecting us regarding the true allegiance of Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), and selling us a boatload of hooey about this being "the end" of anything, there's one distinct visual that's clearly another classic Abrams bait-and-switch.
Of course, we're talking about the image that broke the Internet, of Rey kitted out in Dark Side attire, wielding a double-ended red lightsaber.
The obvious implication is that Rey turns evil during the movie, though most rational fans dismissed it as either a vision or a nightmare sequence.
It'd certainly be hilarious if this wasn't a trick and Rey genuinely did turn heel during the movie, but logically speaking, Abrams is clearly toying with the fanbase here.
There's no chance of the series' most significant female lead in years becoming a villain (or is there?).
