10 Upcoming Movie Trailers That Are Probably Tricking You
6. It's Set In The Inception Universe - Tenet
The first teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan's new movie Tenet still hasn't been officially released online in full, but if you were lucky enough to see it in cinemas, you'll likely remember that it shows a crisp and ambiguous series of images featuring John David Washington's protagonist.
Most tellingly, some very bizarre words appear on the screen at one point in the teaser - "Time has come for a new protagonist."
It's been widely speculated that Tenet's plot revolves around time travel, and the very specific, somewhat awkward wording of that statement would seem to back the rumours up.
Between the studio's brief synopsis for the movie - "An action epic evolving from the world of international espionage" - and the trailer's visual style, it's easy to believe that Tenet might in fact end up existing within the same universe as Nolan's Inception.
Though some fans believe Tenet to be a straight-up Inception sequel, knowing Nolan it's far more likely that Tenet is in fact a tangential movie in the same world.
This would also support the "new protagonist" slogan, with Washington's newly minuted hero replacing Inception's Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), and given that Michael Caine is also confirmed to appear, he could very well reprise his role of Professor Miles.
Nolan loves to layer his movies in a thick air of mystery during the marketing push, so nothing would be that surprising at the end of the day.
But as averse as the director might seem to getting into the shared universe business, the little we know of Tenet so far suggests it's a perfect candidate.
