10 Upcoming Movies That Are Already Doomed
4. Horizon: An American Saga - Chapters 2-4
The first chapter of Kevin Costner's four-part Western saga Horizon was released last summer to mixed reviews while flopping at the box office.
Though this seemed to cast the future of the franchise in doubt, Costner had already shot Chapter 2, which despite premiering at the Venice Film Festival last September is still without a release date, with distributors trying to figure out the best way to release it. Mixed reviews out of Venice didn't help its chances much.
As for Chapter 3? Only nine days of footage were filmed before industry strike action shut production down last May, and a year later it still hasn't resumed shooting as the series' overall future remains in doubt.
Costner insists that the two remaining films will be completed, though given their clear lack of commercial potential it's tough to see how, especially with Costner apparently turning down partnership offers from both Amazon and Netflix.
And if this isn't all bad enough, Costner is currently in the midst of a legal dispute with New Line Cinema over funding for the franchise, with Costner having invested $50 million of his own money to bring it to fruition. What a mess.
Though Chapter 2 will almost certainly be released eventually given that it's fully completed, it's looking increasingly unlikely that the latter half of this ambitious epic will ever see the light of day.
