With all of the sequels on this list, the film with possibly the best chance to beat Avengers: Endgame is a familiar one. Lion King will be reimagined and brought back to the big screen in July. Of all the films to be released this year, none have a better chance to top Endgame than our return to Pride Rock.
As mentioned while discussing Mulan, the live-action remakes Disney have produced in recent years have had varying levels of success. When they have been good they have been colossal hits. 2016's The Jungle Book grabbed $966 million worldwide and was topped the following year by Beauty and the Beast with $1.26 billion.
The original Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast animated films enjoyed a fraction of the Lion King's total $968 million dollar gross, which was the highest total for any animated film when originally released and still places in the top 10.
The Lion King is arguably the most significant film to an entire generation of children and they will be looking forward to not only riding a wave of nostalgia, but introducing their kids to a pivotal story of their adolescence.
Official box office projections for The Lion King are still a few weeks away, but last month a major theater executive predicted The Lion King has a shot to be the biggest movie of all time. Only time will tell if his prediction holds, but there's little doubt that the Lion King can dethrone Avengers: Endgame.
