10 Upcoming Movies That Could Bomb At The Box Office
4. Mortal Engines
It looks as though Mortal Engines has arrived a little to late to the party. Had this been released a few years ago when young adult literary adaptations were at the peak of their popularity, then it stood every chance of becoming a breakout hit. However, with the genre now firmly on its way out it remains to be seen what kind of audience will turn out for the post-apocalyptic adventure.
The project does come with pedigree, however. The script comes from the Academy Award-winning trio of Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Peter Jackson, who all get a lifetime pass from the geek community for writing the seminal Lord of the Rings trilogy. On the flipside, it also means that Mortal Engines comes from the writers of The Hobbit and The Lovely Bones.
Longtime Jackson collaborator and visual effects supervisor Christian Rivers makes his debut behind the camera, armed with a $100m budget and a lot of world-building to do. The footage revealed so far offers little in the way of details, but there is no denying that Mortal Engines faces a tough task to make decent money at the box office as the 'dystopian future with teenage protagonist based on a series of books' sub-genre continues its slow, agonizing death with both critics and audiences alike.
