10 Upcoming Movies That Have Made Terrible Mistakes Already
5. Not Casting The Right Way - The Little Mermaid
While this mistake isn’t set in stone, it seems The Little Mermaid has missed an open goal. The mistake is in the casting, though not the one you’re thinking of...
Casting black actress Halle Bailey as Ariel has sparked some controversy, but given the often vitriolic nature of the criticism, it doesn’t seem like those upset were in the target market for Disney anyway. It’s actually Ursula where Disney’s big mistake (potentially) lies.
Melissa McCarthy is thought to be the front runner, and she seems like a fairly safe choice. However, Disney could be much more ambitious, pay tribute to the original, attract an untapped fanbase and (thinking cynically) save money if they look elsewhere.
Ursula’s design was based on drag queen Divine, the shocking star of Pink Flamingoes. Within the drag community, Ginger Minj has long been considered an ideal successor, but Disney seem set to pass her by.
RuPaul’s Drag Race has made drag mainstream enough for the Met Gala; ignoring this growing fanbase seems foolish. Ginger’s ideal for the part and is hot property, fresh off Dumplin’. Disney needs to call her.
It’s worth remembering though that McCarthy is only rumoured, just as Zendaya and Chloe Moretz were the rumoured Ariel frontrunners.
