Undeniably one of the buzziest projects in production right now is The Gray Man, the Russo brothers' new big-budget action thriller for Netflix.

With a stonking $200 million budget and all-star cast including Chris Evans, Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Billy Bob Thornton, and Alfre Woodard, it is set to be Netflix's biggest movie to date and intended to kickstart a franchise.

Though the Russos earned an enormous amount of trust through their hugely successful work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, audience confidence was shaken somewhat following the release of their recent Tom Holland-starring crime drama Cherry, which received wildly mixed reviews.

Cherry was enough of a misfire to suggest that the Russos may have benefited significantly from the constraints of the MCU, and that when left to their own devices they're prone to bouts of directorial indulgence.

Though The Gray Man is being co-written by regular MCU scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely - who most notably wrote both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame - the fact that the Russos no longer have a Kevin Feige-like figure to guide them could be their undoing.

Considering Netflix's famously hands-off approach to their filmmaking talents, this could be another instance of too much artistic freedom being to a film's detriment.
