Michael Bay's reign of terror at the helm of the Transformers franchise came to a painful end with The Last Knight, which along with scoring the worst reviews of a franchise that critics already hated also made less money than any other entry in the series, and was over $500m down from predecessor Age of Extinction.

After a decade of having their property take an absolute critical battering and with audiences clearly losing interest in their droves, did Paramount take stock and remove the Autobots and Decepticons from our screens for a few years in order to rehabilitate a damaged brand?

Of course not, they hired twelve writers and put up to fifteen projects in active development. Yay for cinematic universes! While that experiment has now mercifully been ended, Bumblebee managed to slip through the cracks and is locked in for a December 21st release.

While the last thing this world needs is more Transformers movies, the presence of Laika's Travis Knight following up his Academy Award-nominated debut feature Kubo and the Two Strings with a Transformers movie is so out-there that it might just work. That being said, the franchise itself may be beyond repair after a decade of mind-numbing Bayhem.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
