3. The LEGO Movie
Since the LEGO series gave families games that kids and adults could both enjoy, the plastic building toy/foot impaler has become synonymous with playful subversion and tongue-in-cheek humour. So really it was only a matter of time before it made the transition to the big screen.
Why it could be rubbish: The trailer hit a month or so ago and its an overall mixed bag. The games recently introduced dialogue, but it still feels out of place coming from the characters mouths. Overall, it seems that the magic of the games cut scenes is going to be harder to recreate when the audience isnt about to be smashing a film set to pieces. Maybe Im being too cynical, not letting the craziness of the world wash over me, but doesnt it seem a bit pushed? If this was a YouTube stop motion animation then maybe itd be acceptable. With broad jokes and so-so animation LEGO doesnt look like an officially related product. Take the Batman appearance. The promise of the LEGO licences popping up opens a world of possibility; Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter have all been made in brick form. The only appearance in the trailer, however, is that of the caped crusader and the joke is as broad as they come; Batman likes black. Haha? My real worry is that the film is going to try and capture the magic of playing with toys (obviously in particular LEGO) the creativity and imagination by going for silly. Yes playing with toys is silly, but to kids its hued with this sense of wonderment, something The LEGO Movie doesn't seem to have.
