1. Black Mass - Johnny Depp
Just when you think Johnny Depp has completely disappeared down the weird plug-hole that Tim Burton has seemingly tried to coax him down for years, he goes and makes (another) film about Whitey Bulger that actually looks brilliant.
Whether it's successful or not, Depp clearly believes that performance is key - which is why he struggles with restraint when he's given opportunities like Mortdecai - and his terrifying transformation as Bulger looks intense and incredible.
Hopefully, the film will allow him to pull back from the distasteful, clownish image he has cut for himself recently, and he might go back to being a little more discerning.
Will It Last?
Unfortunately, Depp has something of the Bruce Willis about him, though he conversely tends to replace apathy with a lack of restraint, so he might just swing back to being over-silly.
And the fact that he has the Alice In Wonderland sequel and a fifth Pirates Of The Caribbean coming next doesn't exactly fill you with confidence.
