4. Joker: Folie à Deux
As critically and commercially successful as 2019's Joker was, it didn't really feel like a film that begged for a sequel, but it wasn't too long before a follow-up was nevertheless confirmed.
And from its portentous title through to the fact that it's a musical, Joker: Folie à Deux is certainly a bold sequel that seems like the furthest thing from a safe, programmatic successor.
Whether it'll actually be any good, though, remains to be seen.
While it's tough to picture the great Joaquin Phoenix getting involved if the script wasn't in good shape, it's much easier to imagine filmmaker Todd Phillips becoming massively over-confident following the awards success of the first film.
A musical romantic thriller revolving around Joker (Phoenix) and Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga) is far from what most expected for Joker 2, and the end result could either be a film that redefines the very notion of the comic book sequel, or an over-indulgent disaster courtesy of a wildly hubristic director.
