5. Brendan Fraser - The Whale
No acting transformation this year has been more buzzed about than Brendan Fraser's radical preparation for Darren Aronofsky's new drama The Whale.
In order to portray 600lb protagonist Charlie, Fraser spent four hours each day being fitted with body prosthetics that weighed up to 300lbs themselves.
Though the trailers have evidently been careful about what they've shown of Fraser in the role, for fear of exploiting the tender subject matter, it appears to be an astonishingly believable transformation and a performance like we've never seen Fraser give.
While reviews for Aronofsky's film are generally quite mixed, critics have been near-unanimous in their praise for Fraser himself, who is currently considered a frontrunner for the Best Actor Oscar.
Though there are certainly those who would prefer an obese actor to simply play a role like this, there's little denying the incredible craft of the makeup team or Fraser's commitment to the part.
This looks to be a very special performance indeed, and quite the feel-good comeback arc for Fraser.
