10 Upcoming Movies With INSANE Budgets
3. Michael ($155 Million)
Next year's Michael Jackson biopic was always going to be pricey, and while it's not terribly surprising that it's going to be the most expensive musical biopic of all time, its $155 million budget can't help but seem excessive.
For context, 2018's Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody cost $55 million - a figure that seems even more reasonable in retrospect, especially considering its lavish musical sequences and large cast.
More recently the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown meanwhile cost roughly $70 million - still less than half of Michael.
Even accepting that Michael will likely be packed with dazzling set-pieces, that's a basically obscene budget for something that isn't a CGI-slathered action movie.
Plus, this figure was made public before significant portions of the film's third act had to recently be reshot, which may well have caused the budget to balloon even higher.
While the commercial potential of an MJ biopic speaks for itself, the budget still leaves it exposed for a massive pile of money.
It's not remotely surprising, then, that Lionsgate is considering splitting it into a two-part cinematic event in order to milk some more money from the entire endeavour.
