8. The Flash

Although a Flash movie has been in the works since 2013, the first acknowledgment of a Flashpoint adaptation came in 2017 with a planned release the following year. Unfortunately, the film has had difficulty gaining anything resembling traction.

Flashpoint is a 2011 DC story following the Flash as he attempts to correct an altered timeline before war devastates the planet. It is a tremendous story, but the greater value for the extended universe is its use of time travel and multiple timelines. As a franchise undergoing an informal relaunch, this concept could be used to rectify certain aspects of the DCEU while maintaining more positive existing elements.

This increasingly seems like an opportunity Warner Bros. will miss. In the five-plus years of development, the movie has underwent several writes and directorial changes. Currently, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are set direct as comic legend Grant Morrison and the film's lead Ezra Miller are rewriting the screenplay.

Meanwhile, the DC Extended Universe moves on and may finally be on track following some recent successes. Although a positive development, this makes DC less dependent on a one-time retcon that Flashpoint could bring. The Flash movie may fare better telling a smaller, more intimate story instead.

In either case, DC seems to be on the upswing. With Joker, Wonder Woman 84 and James Gunn's Suicide Squad sequel on the horizon, there should plenty of goodwill built for The Flash. It is just a matter of whether or not production can steady itself enough for its 2021 release date.
