10 Upcoming Non-English Language Films To Look Out For In 2023

5. Alcarràs

The Spanish-Italian drama Alcarràs has been out in those two countries for the better part of a year now, but fear not! For we have found a loophole.

Directed by Carla Simón, who is sadly not a Spanish version of Carly Simon, the movie takes place in the eponymous peach-farming region of Catalonia. The impending arrival of a plot of solar panels forces a rural family to come to terms with their way of life and with each other.

Now, we'd love to tell you a bit more about the actors in this film, but sadly we can't. This isn't because we can't be bothered, but rather because there is very little information out there about them.

That's because Alcarràs' cast are mostly non-professionals. This choice was taken to add to the film's authenticity, as its stars are all local people who speak the locally-specific variation of the language.

An intriguing concept through and through, the film currently sits on 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and has been praised for capturing the beautiful essence of the Spanish countryside.

It is available to UK viewers through the hipsters' choice steaming service MUBI from the 24th February.

Told you we found a solution.
