10 Upcoming Sequels Nobody Asked For (That Might Be Great)
9. Avatar 2
Given how self-contained the story of the first Avatar was, there was never any need for it to lead to an expanded universe or even a series of sequels, even with the universe offering ample adaptable potential. For a long time, it looked like James Cameron wasn't all too keen either, but then came the news that he was in fact making several hundred sequels all at once and you'd literally never get a break from them. Well, maybe that's an exaggeration but to go from none to 4 sequels in quick succession was cause for whiplash.
When you look at the box office results alone, it's tempting to accuse Cameron of cynically cashing in on the most bankable property in cinema (though the further away from the original we've got, the less bankable it's been), but he assures everyone that he has a narrative plan that justifies all of this.
And you know what? If it works, it could be phenomenal. It could be the second defining sci-fi franchise of the coming decade as it goes year-on-year-off with Star Wars for Disney. Because if even half of the audience of the original comes out to see the first sequel, it's a billion dollar movie guaranteed and for all the accusations that it ripped off FernGully and Dances With Wolves (it certainly feels like it), Avatar WAS great, so there's cause for excitement.
