This one stings, since poor Lord of the Rings star/legendary villain Hugo Weaving wasn't even given time to consider a role in Lana Wachowski's forthcoming fourth instalment of the blockbuster sci-fi franchise, The Matrix.
The Sam Neill look-alike may have been a pivotal player in the original trilogy as the implacably slimy villain Agent Smith, but even starring in one of the filmmaker's odder projects in the form of 2012's Cloud Atlas wasn't enough to get poor Hugo a call back.
Literally, no less: the actor says he told the director he had a busy schedule and may be able to fit in the fourth film, but according to Weaving by the time he returned their call he'd been replaced.
