Creating a cinematic universe isn't easy, and one of the first failed attempts came courtesy of Fox who, after X-Men: The Last Stand, tried to create a myriad of franchises spun off from individual solo movies. The first (and last) was X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which also functioned as a backdoor to introduce Taylor Kitsch's Gambit in time for his own film.

Of course, not only did the reception to Wolverine kill this entire enterprise dead, but Kitsch himself also received backlash, which gave the studio the excuse to re-approach their original choice for the role, Channing Tatum. With the new star locked in, the movie was once again put back into production, this time with Rise of the Planet of the Apes' Rupert Wyatt, then Doug Liman, and finally, in 2016, Gore Verbinski. During this time it missed multiple release dates as well, at one point being primed for an October 6th 2015 date.

Just when things were looking up though, with Verbinski on board and a February 14th 2019 release date locked in, the director departed due to creative differences. Consequently, Fox are back to meeting with directors, with the project being removed from their slate.

In one form or another, there's been talk of a Gambit movie since 2002, and as directors come and go and start dates continually get missed, it's hard to imagine a world where the finished film is tearing up the box office.
