10 Upcoming Trends That Will Change Movies Forever

9. Video Game Adaptations That Don't Suck

Looking back at the video games that have been made into movies, how many have actually been any good? Mortal Kombat, though cheeseball, captured the spirit of the games perfectly, Silent Hill was decent until its ropey third act, and Prince of Persia had its charms to a point, though none of these examples are genuinely great movies. On the other end of the spectrum, there's Uwe Boll's House of the Dead and Alone in the Dark, Hitman, Max Payne, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, and of course, Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil movies, all of which are wretched beyond belief. But times are a-changing, as Hollywood finally seems to be taking the video game movie seriously, what with acclaimed director Duncan Jones tackling Warcraft, Michael Fassbender starring in and producing Assassin's Creed, and a Sam Raimi-produced The Last of Us movie being in the early stages. One of these three is at least likely to produce the first unambiguously great video game movie, which respects its audience enough to stick to the source material and deliver a high quality final product. The knock-on effect of one great video game movie that also makes a ton of money is that other filmmakers and studios will start taking the medium more seriously, in just the same way as comic books have been shown a lot more respect by Hollywood in the last 10-15 years. If the source material is handled more carefully, the video game movie bubble could begin to grow just as the comic book movie one has over the last decade to become quite the phenomenon indeed.
