10 Utterly Absurd Comic Book Villains (That Could Be Great On Film)

10. Doctor Doom

10 Doom Cropped1 Doctor Doom is rightly one of the most popular villains in all of comic-dom. He is also very absurd. His full name is Victor von Doom. I'll leave that with you for a moment to sink in. His name is Doom. Doctor Doom doesn't even have a doctorate. He is actually a university drop-out. He ordered his minions to call him "Doctor" because his arch-nemesis Reed Richards has a doctorate. He always wears his trademark metal suit of armour complete with a metal face mask. The mask covers scarring on his face from one of his own failed experiments. It is unclear whether the scarring is substantial or just a minor blemish that he can't bear himself or others seeing. Doom is the ruler of the fictional European nation of Latveria. There are approximately 500,000 citizens in Latveria that he rules over with his iron fists. He lives in Castle Doom in the capital Doomstadt. Being ruler of Latveria also grants him diplomatic immunity when in other countries. How could he possibly work in film? Doctor Doom appeared in the 2005 and 2007 Fantastic Four films played by Julian McMahon. No doubt Doom will, and should, return in the Fantastic Four reboot planned for 2015. There are two things that need to happen to make Doctor Doom work. Firstly, it is essential that the right actor is chosen for Doom. Doom doesn't need to have a pretty face, but he does need to have a commanding villain voice. He needs to be played straight, but with a hint of tongue-in-cheek. Veteran villain actors like Alan Rickman, Jeremy Irons, Ralph Fiennes or Christoph Waltz would smash this kind of role. Secondly, the Fantastic Four themselves need to realise the absurdity of Doom. It will make the characters themselves more realistic, and the film overall more fun.
