10 Utterly Bad-Ass Movie Characters Who Ruled 2013

6. Colonel Stars & Stripes €“ Kick-Ass 2

Now and then, we see flashes of the brilliance that propelled Jim Carrey from rubber-faced comedy goon to genuine Hollywood star. It's becoming increasingly rare, admittedly, but once in a while, he moves away from starring as himself in variations of Liar Liar (sometimes he even brings penguins) and offers something genuinely entertaining. He did so with Kick-Ass 2, which just about missed every other beat it aimed for. All-in-all, the sequel missed the point of what made the original so unique and so successful: the profanity and shock factor were both blunted by familiarity, and that was pretty catastrophic for the film's obvious agenda. So, how does Colonel Stars & Stripes qualify here? It wasn't merely that Carrey's performance was far and away the best part of the film, he also spectacularly undermined it, calling it a mistake and offensive in the context of wider concerns about screen violence. Carrey added an extra spice to the character by his frank Twitter outburst, making the Colonel a genuine cult figure who was basically hated by his creator, and it's hard not to love that, even if the film sucked badly.
